Back in the year 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for a medical school interview. My plan was I would book lodging upon arrival, but upon reaching the city, a major event was taking place and every single youth hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked.

Coming from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could just sleep at the terminal – but soon learned Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open 24 hours. Unsure of how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on a city-bound bus and began walking in the direction of a gaming venue, thinking I could pass the night in a place operating all night. Admittedly, this plan at my peak for nailing an interview the following day, but as a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

Our society requires more folks with such compassion.

It seems I seemed confused because a young woman saw me wandering around the city center and inquired whether I needed help. I recounted my situation and immediately she offered I could sleep on the ground in her student dorm at the local university – a perfect solution, as that’s where my interview would take place the next morning. She even offered a meal: a leftover stuffed baguettes she brought back her part-time job. I had access to a hot shower and a secure location to rest to spend the night.

Looking back, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she undertook being a woman letting a male stranger who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. Back then I was in a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to the potential danger. Now, as a father, it astounds me she took that chance – and remain deeply appreciative.

Ultimately, I did not go to ANU, and I lost touch with her again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of generosity. My sincere desire is that life has rewarded her generosity many times over. We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.
