A comprehensive rescue and recovery effort is currently ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of unlocated sailboats transporting relief goods traveling from Mexico to Havana.

Naval Search and Rescue Efforts Deployed

Authorities in Mexico has deployed naval assets and military search aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were carrying a minimum of nine sailors, per a navy statement.

The ships had been expected to arrive in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their safe arrival, authorities reported.

Background of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

Cuba has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the country struggles through multiple nationwide blackouts.

"Both skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and each boat are fitted with appropriate safety equipment and signalling equipment," a representative associated with the mission said.

The nine individuals on board are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"We are working closely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.

Recent Humanitarian Shipment

Previously that week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and warmly received another boat that had transported 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the country.

That boat, called "a modern Granma" following the name of the boat in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to launch the revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered solar equipment, drugs, infant formula, bikes and foodstuffs.

Wider Political Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of efforts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, when a fuel embargo on the country began.

The United Nations have since warned of "dire" shortages of supplies, with more than 50,000 surgical procedures postponed in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Political tensions have intensified in recent months, with remarks from several representatives highlighting the delicate situation regarding relations.

In response to previous proposals, a high-ranking government figure insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Indications suggest that initial phases of negotiations commenced, although their current progress remains uncertain.

The naval forces said it was committed to using every available asset at its disposal to find the sailboats and secure the safety of the sailors.

To date, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
