California is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Instance in 25 Years.
After a quarter-century span, not a single part of the state is enduring dryness. This landmark event comes on the heels of challenging years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated blaze threats and strained its enormous farming industry.
An Update Reveals No Drought
A recent update from the federal monitoring program showed that all of California is without dry or drought conditions. This development resulted from a period of heavy precipitation that topped up major reservoirs like the state's largest lakes well above their historic averages.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve always lived in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” stated a weather expert.
Following Powerful Weather to Wet Holidays
The path to this point included severe and lethal winter storms that struck the state in 2023, causing extensive inundation, power outages, and deaths. Even though those events began to alleviate the drought, they did not eliminate it.
As late as late December, regions like Modoc County were deemed experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the onset of 2026 eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.
Essential Mountain Snowfall Is Below Average
However, authorities caution that the end of drought status is not the same as having no water worries. Latest data of the high-elevation snow show it at only about 70% of the average for this date.
This snowpack, which provides about a third of the state's water supply as it runs off, is an essential component for the year ahead. Hydrology managers have emphasized that it is premature to make predictions for the coming year.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” explained a state water resources manager. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”
While the drought map indicates no dryness, the focus now shifts to maintaining this precious water balance throughout the months to come.
