Catherine's Annual Christmas Service of Carols Honours Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey, with attendees featuring dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The large audience will hear a mix of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

A Theme of Compassion and Love

The theme of the service, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose young girl was lost to a tumour, and who established a foundation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a child with a terminal illness.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.

A Gradual Return

The princess has been making her own steady comeback to public life subsequent to her illness and medical care, in November making her first public speech for two years, in which she discussed recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Musical Talent and Access

Attendees entering the Abbey will enjoy performances from young musicians aided by the Future Talent charity, established in part by the former royal to broaden opportunities for music lessons.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been helped by the charity, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in the evening's event.

"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now studying at the prestigious music academy, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to cultivate their performance abilities.

Generations Gathering

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who plays the euphonium, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.

Within the audience will be people from various age groups.

That will include nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a youth community award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to generate funds for food banks.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been decorated with custom-created holiday decorations, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

The musical lineup includes Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be broadcast on a major network on Christmas Eve.
