“It was regrettable. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty manageable for the billionaire proprietor.
