The Rams and Seahawks (both at 7-2) seem like the most balanced franchises in the NFL, and delivered overwhelming triumphs during Sunday's action. The Eagles with six wins despite their struggles maintain one of the most talented rosters throughout football, comparable to the Packers (5-2-1 record). Even the Lions (6-3), who have been inconsistent along both lines of scrimmage while managing internal staff conflicts, have shown they can hammer good teams. For all five, it's straightforward to envision a championship trajectory.

Muddled AFC Picture

Turning to the American Football Conference, the playoff picture is thoroughly confusing. The four teams leading their divisions after ten games: the Colts, Patriots, Broncos (each with 8-2 records) along with Pittsburgh (5-4 record). Take another look. No Chiefs presence. Not the Bills. Baltimore and Cincinnati are absent. The traditional powers, backed by elite NFL signal-callers, possess either glaring roster weaknesses or have suffered medical setbacks.

Competitive Balance System

In some ways, this is exactly what the league wants. Yet observing the current division frontrunners in the American Football Conference remains somewhat odd. Areas of each team suggest title potential, though not comprehensively. Colts Situation

Starting in Indianapolis, their quarterback hasn't descended to total collapse. But the last two weeks have caused alarm. He’s back to turning over the ball and faltering under duress. He was sacked seven times facing Atlanta in the weekend game, and endured a five-minute stretch during which he tossed an interception and coughed up the ball thrice. This follows he gave away possessions five times versus Pittsburgh.

The Colts’ offense excelled during early games since Jones evaded catastrophic mistakes. Jonathan Taylor and the offensive line ensure Indianapolis remains capable of overcoming occasional setbacks, as demonstrated overseas. But Jones returning to his old blunder-prone days would terminate any playoff run.

New England Patriots

New England appears somewhat similar. Last season, they were league laughingstocks. Now, they’re the league’s happiest surprise and the most successful franchise in football after seven straight wins. If not for fumbling away a manageable matchup against Pittsburgh, they’d be sitting nine wins, one loss with the best record. In the prior year, they were old and slow. Today they appear inexperienced, speedy and bold. Still, it’s hard to ignore the ease of the Patriots' matchups. They've played against the easiest slate throughout football, and there have still been cracks. The signal-caller has been sacked 35 times – the second-most in football – with several hits he absorbed on Sunday appeared dangerous. With continued play, those beatings accumulate.

Denver Analysis

The Broncos hold eight wins similarly, and it still feels that they're barely surviving. Bo Nix has shown inconsistency, and the offensive unit laboring, with the defense doing all the heavy lifting. Without serviceable quarterback play, the Broncos aren’t scaring any playoff team. Los Angeles remains nearby in the AFC West holding a 7-2 record, but the injuries within their blocking corps will make it tough for extended playoff success.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Then we have the Steelers, inexplicably frontrunning the AFC North notwithstanding receiving a decisive loss to Los Angeles during prime time. They've been outscored overall, their defense too often disappears, with their quarterback's restrictions at this stage of his career continue to show up. They maintain a 5-4 record while surviving, but Baltimore, featuring a recovered Jackson and facing easier opponents, are riding a three-game streak. We shouldn't be completely astonished that Baltimore has closed the gap to just one game, though the speed of this shift highlights deficiencies within the Steelers' uneven performances. Considering the Ravens opened the season 1-5 yet still appear capable of division victory reveals much about the complete conference.

Established Contenders

The Ravens' form part of the Big Three – alongside the Bills and Chiefs – driven by elite quarterback play, that would continue to generate the most fear among competitors should they reach postseason. They’re the No One Wants To See ‘Em teams, but the Chiefs and Bills continue to self-destruct.

Buffalo Analysis

Previously, the Bills were riding high after beating the Chiefs. This weekend they encountered one of the most disappointing losses this year. They didn't simply fail to the Dolphins; they were embarrassed, dropping a 30-13 road game. This represented Miami's initial victory versus Buffalo in more than 1,000 days.
