Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity

Passing on unwanted presents could be considered a little discourteous – except if it's done the right way.

A Philanthropic Sale

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 presents received by her by world leaders during her travels. The eclectic collection could include gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

The presents, collectively, are worth an estimated €800,000. They are scheduled to be put up for sale via competitive bidding by a Italian fine art auction house. An exact timeline remains to be announced, but the aim is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the revenue benefiting various charities.

Palazzo Chigi Treasures

These gifts reportedly kept in a secure area on the third floor of the government headquarters. Sources state that Meloni additionally planning to auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been sitting unused for years.

A complete inventory is yet to be disclosed, but some insight were revealed earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion focused on if a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. By law, a prime minister cannot take home presents exceeding €300.

A Global Array of Gifts

Among the items:

  • A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Paintings from Moldova.
  • Various other items including cosmetics, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Diplomatic Context

Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from her own political sphere, with building relationships with global statesmen and making Italy as a key protagonist on the international platform once again.

This unique auction represents a unconventional way to manage the state presents that are collected during a leader's tenure.
