Weather experts have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with snowfall likely throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers have been told to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Go Ahead Despite Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are set to take place, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This comes despite advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," stated the weather service.

Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with no rain and open skies. Temperatures are expected to be cold, making extra layers essential, according to forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for Friday

Moving into Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are anticipated on trains and buses.

The Mercury Forecast to Drop Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Warnings Issued

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this indicated the weather was likely to lead to notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This involves a potential rise in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.

The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, preparing for winter conditions is utterly essential.
