The offspring of former South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terror-linked charges at the start of her court case in the coastal city of Durban city.

The defendant, 43, is being prosecuted over comments she published on online platforms in the past during violent demonstrations in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the apprehension of her dad.

A seven-day period of disorder in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including theft and intentional burning, resulted in at least three hundred killed and led to damage worth an projected $2.8 billion (£2.2bn).

Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of fuelling this violence and confronts charges of incitement to commit terror-related activities and civil unrest.

Background of the Case

The unrest were concentrated in the areas of Gauteng and KZN and followed the ex-leader's detention for ignoring a judicial ruling to give evidence at an investigation into claims of corruption while he was serving as president.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has consistently refuted the allegations against her, with her lawyer earlier labelling the state's evidence as insufficient.

She has also frequently said the charges against her were an effort to resolve political scores with her dad after he established his own political party and ran against the ANC.

Backing and Case Arguments

This was reinforced by the foundation, which claimed the legal matter was an "misuse of authority" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and kinship targeting" against the ex-leader and his kin.

A few of backers from her party, the political party, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her parent and other party leaders participated in the court sessions inside.

The defense has argued that the testimony presented by the state is inadequate and lacks compelling evidence for a conviction.

Main Aspects of the Case

  • Social media comments from the past form the core of the state's argument
  • Violent protests in 2021 resulted in major fatalities and economic destruction
  • The accused faces multiple allegations of encouragement to unrest
  • Legal proceedings are expected to proceed for several weeks

The trial continues as the prosecution and defense present their cases before the judge in what is expected to be a carefully observed legal battle with substantial policy consequences for South Africa.
