A popular South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country grappling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was attacked in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old presenter was approached by a trio of assailants, one of whom began shooting at him before running away.

The purpose of the shooting remains unclear and no one has been arrested have been made, according to authorities.

The Fatal Incident

Law enforcement said that Stock was ambushed as he was leaving a location in the vicinity of the city center landmark.

He had been present for hours at the property supervising the installation of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by unidentified individuals, according to reports.

"It is alleged the victim was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," authorities confirmed.

CCTV footage showed a man with dreadlocks and dressed in what resembled a security uniform opening fire on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was hit but fell down a short distance away.

Officials noted that Stock had an gun that was not fired and no items were stolen during the attack.

Important clues, like bullet casings, were recovered from the scene.

Appeal for Witnesses

Police have appealed members of the public who may have have information to come forward.

"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the attack, and officers have been tracking them to establish their location," added an official.

Family and Public Reaction

His sister, Nicole Stock, said the relatives are devastated to understand the tragedy.

"I am in shock. I am shattered," were her words.
"Everyone understood he was a representative for countless citizens. He addressed issues courageously about subjects not many people were willing to tackle. This is a profound tragedy."

She requested the public to avoid sharing explicit content from the incident, explaining this was an extremely painful time, especially for Stock's young family.

Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that aired on a South African digital satellite entertainment channel.

A public representative stated the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a tragedy for all South Africans".

A broadcasting director expressed that "Stock was far beyond a face of a reality series. He was a talented storyteller, a true devotee of sound and a generous spirit who brought joy and energy to every moment on screen. His artistic passion left an indefinable mark."

In a statement, the channel he worked for declared Stock was known for his presence, kindness and sharp wit, adding that his memory "will endure".
