Space Traveler Shares Depression In the Wake of Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also carried celebrity crewmates.
The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the edge of space.
The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from various fields.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
