The network's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by dark humor, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family go about their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

β€œWe're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. β€œIt's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
