Strong cold-season winds caused walls to collapse onto fragile tents housing people displaced by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of no fewer than 4 individuals. This tragedy highlights the dangerous living conditions that persist after more than 24 months of devastating bombardment and critical lack of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Offers No Respite from Severe Elements

Although a ceasefire has been active from October, humanitarian organizations report that Palestinians do not have the adequate housing necessary to survive recurring cold-weather events.

Medical staff at Shifa hospital, which received the victims, said on this week that the deceased include a pair of adult females, a girl, and a man.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on the same day that a one-year-old boy died of hypothermia during the night.

"The world has allowed us to witness loss of life in all its forms," stated Bassel Hamouda following the burial. "It’s true the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have seen all imaginable reasons of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Shelter Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, 3 members of a one family — elderly a man, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an 26-foot high wall fell onto their tent in a area near the sea of Gaza City. At least 5 additional people were hurt in the event.

Family members on Tuesday started clearing the rubble that had buried their family and reconstructing the tent shelters for those who remained.

Aid Efforts and Ongoing Crisis

United Nations agencies and its humanitarian partners were handing out shelter kits, tarps, blankets and clothing as well as food and sanitation supplies throughout Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

Most of Palestinians live in improvised tents since their homes were turned into ruins during the hostilities. Aid groups contend not enough building supplies are reaching Gaza under the truce.

Casualty Figures Since the Ceasefire

Local health authorities, part of the administration, reports over four hundred and forty people have been killed by gunfire and their remains taken to hospitals after the ceasefire went into effect. The authority maintains detailed fatality data that are seen as generally reliable by UN agencies and outside analysts.

James Elder, spokesperson for the UN children’s agency Unicef, stated on that day that at least one hundred minors under the age of 18 – sixty males and 40 girls – had been lost their lives since the ceasefire started due to armed actions, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, air raids, artillery fire and employment of bullets. These numbers, he said, represented incidents where enough information had been compiled to warrant recording, but the total toll is believed to be higher. He noted that many hundreds of minors had been injured.

"Although 'explosions and shootings have slowed' under the ceasefire, they have not ceased," the spokesperson informed journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video link from Gaza City. "Therefore what the international community now calls calm would be considered a crisis anywhere else," he said.

Another Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of more than two million people has been struggling to keep the cold weather and storms at bay while facing shortages of humanitarian aid and a lack of more substantial transitional shelter, which is badly required throughout the colder season. This marks the 3rd winter after the war involving the state and the group started on 7 October 2023, when militants stormed into southern Israel and killed approximately twelve hundred individuals and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.

The local health authority reports more than seventy-one thousand four hundred people have been fatally injured in the subsequent military campaign.
